Blackberry Vanilla Smoothie

Low fat smoothies are great options for breakfasts on the run, as after workout snacks, or even as after school snacks for kids. I make many different types of smoothies from both fresh and frozen fruit, and find that with a container of whey protein in the cupboard and a couple of choices of frozen fruit in my freezer I always have the ingredients for a quick, healthy pick-me-up. This summer I was lucky enough to pick a few bags of wild blackberries and I have been using these for frozen treats, baked goods and in this vanilla blackberry smoothie. I always like to add a couple of extras into my smoothies such as flax seeds or flax oil which are rich in Omega 3s, and even a tablespoon or two of regular oatmeal to both help thicken the smoothie as well as add additional nutrients such as fiber and protein. I used vanilla flavored whey protein in my smoothie but plain would work just as well.

  • Whey protein is a pure, natural, high quality protein from cow’s milk. It is a rich source of the essential amino acids needed on a daily basis by the body and it contains little to no fat, lactose or cholesterol.
  • Blackberries are rich in flavonoids that help counter cell damage reducing the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Blackberries also contain important antioxidants that help reduce inflammation.
  • Flax seed oil is rich in Omega 3′s and oatmeal adds additional fiber and protein.
