Quinoa Revolution Review & Giveaway

I love cookbooks and read them like other folks read novels. I have recently acquired a few really good healthy cookbooks that I will review here on Recipe Rebuild, and because I think these books are so good, we will be doing a cookbook giveaway for every book reviewed. This will be a new monthly feature here at Recipe Rebuild, so check back each month to see each new book reviewed.

Quinoa is an ingredient that I really only started to incorporate into my diet over the past year or two, but one that I have really learned to love. If you are not familiar with it, quinoa is an amazing ingredient, and is not a grain, but a seed, so is gluten free. It is also a complete protein containing all 8 essential amino acids, and is a good source of iron, phosphorous, magnesium, calcium, vitamin E, and folic acid so you can see why some consider it a superfood and why it is becoming more and more popular.

When I came across Quinoa Revolution written by Patricia Green and Carolyn Hemming at my local bookstore I just had to buy it. If you love quinoa, are not familiar with it, or simply just need some help learning how to prepare it, then this is a great cookbook for you. With 150 recipes from breakfast options to dessert, all under 500 calories, this book is an encyclopedia of quinoa facts and recipes. This book begins with tips on how to integrate quinoa into your diet for health and fitness, details on how best to cook quinoa, and a chapter answering many of the most commonly asked questions relating to quinoa. Recipe chapters include Basics, Breakfast, Salads/Sides & Snacks, Soups & Stews, Meals, and Dessert, and the book is packed with vibrant color photos throughout.

I have just begun to prepare some of the recipes from the book, but every one that I have tasted so far was delicious tasting and easy to prepare. My favorite quinoa recipe adapted from the book so far has to be Quinoa Porridge With Caramelized Bananas, Toasted Walnuts & Diced Prunes, but we also enjoyed the Baked Spinach Parmesan Arancini, Baked Tomato & Quinoa Stuffed Zucchini With Mozzarella, and the Roasted Garlic & Mushroom Soup which was delicious. Although I have used quinoa in salads and soups in the past, the recipes in Quinoa Revolution offer so many more ideas for using quinoa that you will never run out of options.

As we begin our new year in 2013, it is a great time to take charge of our eating habits and make healthier choices. Adding quinoa into your weekly menus is a great start, and this wonderful cookbook will certainly help you on your way.
